Preserving the rich history of the Lowcountry is the aim of this popular historic attraction in the Pawleys Island area, located just south of the island in Georgetown, S.C.

Set on 16,000 acres of land, this historic site was once the winter retreat of Wall Street financier and presidential advisor Bernard Baruch. The home itself was visited by luminaries such as Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt, among others. 

In addition to tours of the old mansion, visitors to Hobcaw Barony can also explore the property’s 19th Century slave village and take bus tours of the historic grounds which were used for such things as rice and indigo production. 

But the history is just the start of what you’ll find at Hobcawm, because this amazingly scenic area is also devoted to the preservation of the area’s wildlife and you’ll find much to do in the 1,800 square-foot Discovery Center, which offers exhibits on hunting, wildlife and endangered species habitats.

Tours of the center are available Tuesday through Friday mornings each week — make sure to call ahead for availability and reservations.

Hobcaw also offers a rare opportunity to study all kinds of ecological and marine science species in the grounds’ marshes and forests.
