The Pawleys Island-area’s only brew pub, Quigley’s Pint & Plate is more than fresh, made-on-site beer (although, who could argue with that?), the eatery also offers a Lowcountry take on upscale barroom grub.

Overlooking the lake at the Shops at Mingo development across Ocean Highway (U.S.) from the Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort, Quigley’s is refined but casual.

It was established in 2007 by partners Michael Benton and namesake Josh Quigley, who earned his reputation in Grand Strand craft beer circles as head brewer at Liberty Brewery and Steakhouse in Myrtle Beach and co-founder of Myrtle Beach’s New South Brewing.

The bar area is kind of small, and usually fills up quickly as patrons jockey for the handful of barstools available.

Eight beers are always on tap at Quigley’s and the chalkboard behind the bar will tell you what’s currently on tap. The pub’s lineup includes a rotation of its signature beers, including Longboard Lager, Neck Red Ale, Swamp Fox IPA, Nut Brown Ale, Shakedown Wheat, Peach Wheat, and during our recent visit, a high-gravity beer named Uncle Fester, described as a high-octane Oktoberfest-style at close to 10 per cent ABV (alcohol by volume). Wines and cocktails are also available.

Happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. daily featuring $2 pints of beer, $3 vodka drinks and discounted appetizers. But you’re going to need something to pair with those craft beers, so it’s best to grab a table in the more spacious dining room.

Walled off from the bar area, there’s a large, open and naturally-lit paneling-walled dining space, and when weather permits you can also dine outside on the waterfront deck. The lunch menu is dominated by appetizers, salads, soups and sandwiches, although there are a handful of entree items, none of which top $20, such as Shepherd’s Pie (made with lamb), Fish and Chips and Chicken and Waffles.

The dinner menu features more entree items, including various steaks and seafood combos, and is slightly pricier.

Off-the-beaten path menu items include Black Eyed Pea  Hummus, Ahi Tuna Nachos, and the Pan-Seared Scallops that are served over bacon cheddar grit cakes with creamy crawfish succotash. A kids menu is available too – and this is a kid-friendly venue as it is not overrun by the bar area – it just happens to be a tasty eatery that serves and makes its own tasty barley-and-hops froth.

Quigley’s has rotating specials, too, such as all-you-can-eat fried shrimp on Thursdays for $18. But craft beer-lovers should note: the day to be at the bar is Wednesday, when growler (64-ounce jug) fill-ups are only $5 – that’s basically four pints of beer for a fiver. Quigley’s is smoke-free. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
