In the space of about an hour, the curious and festival-inclined can drive north in an automobile and enter an environment very much unlike the marshes, beach houses, and golf courses of Pawleys Island. Because there lies Aynor, South Carolina, estimated population 650, and home of the annual Hoe Down, to be held this year on September 16th. A parade of trucks, tractors, floats, and other bucolic oddities will kick off the festivities at 10 a.m., followed by a day full of arts, crafts, regional and fair-style fare (chicken bog, barbeque, funnel cakes, pizza), live music, children’s activities, and dancing. Founded in 1979 by the local Pilot Club, the event now draws around 25,000 revelers each year for what festival organizers describe as a “big time in a small town.” In the grand tradition of American exploration, it’s best to see these types of things for yourself. Also, dress “down” so as not to appear completely out of place.More Details
