Pawleys Island is one of, if not the oldest, Southern coastal towns. In spirit of keeping it close to its roots, the people of Pawleys Island have kept large shopping malls and big box stores such as Walmart away from their town. So then where does one shop for clothing, food, and other things?
There are some famous places in Pawleys Island, such as the Hammock Shops Village, that are well-known all along the Grand Strand. But there also places that are less likely to be found by visitors but are coveted by the Lowcountry locals.

The story of the Hammock Shops in Pawleys Island began long, long ago in 1889. That’s when Riverboat Captain Joshua Ward created the most comfortable hammock in existence and built what is now known as the Original Hammock Shop. Now arguably the best place to shop in Pawleys Island, the Hammock Shops Village features 22 unique stores as well as a few restaurants to satisfy hungry shoppers. You won’t find your average shopping mall here; instead you will experience the charm of the South Carolina low country while you peruse the variety of merchants.
Pawleys Island Outdoors
It is no secret that there are plenty of people who fish and hunt along the Grand Strand. Instead of going to big box stores to buy gear, give Pawleys Island Outdoors a shot. This store offers a variety of equipment for freshwater and saltwater fishing, hunting, as well as other outdoor activities. Stock up on bait, rent a boat, or browse the section of clothing. Come to this local shop and check out the Surf the Earth merchandise, or choose a rental option. From Surf the Earth, you can rent surfboards, paddleboards, bikes, and kayaks.
